Description:
An explosive detector that uses sensor-based passive interrogation of area targets from a distance to create a target image. Analyzing the spectral signature indicates the chemical nature of the unknown material. Example technologies include hyperspectral imaging, used primarily for solids analysis, and differential radiometry with a Compact Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer, used for chemical vapor detection.
DIQCODE: [D,I]
ImportantFeatures:
Products are generally medium-sized systems, sometimes mounted on a tripod.
Operating Considerations:
Since these are imaging systems, they are frequently used as cueing devices to help target specific locations for confirmatory sensors. An example would be Shortwave Infrared (SWIR) imaging coupled with Raman Spectroscopy for confirmation. Always consider strengths and weaknesses of specific technologies, and utilize multiple technologies to increase confidence levels.
Since these are passive devices that do not involve projected laser light, there are no eye-safety considerations.
Consult user manual for proper temperature operating range of device.
Consider type and availability of batteries.
Additional expense may be involved in purchasing / maintaining libraries.
